The citadel was first built by the Ly dynasty in 1010 and was the seat of the Vietnamese court until 1810, when Hue was the capital. The royal palace and other structures were largely destroyed by the colonial French in the 19th century.
Some structures remain as the door and the flag tower of Hanoi.
